An Earlyarts Professional Development Day

for the South East Hub Area run by West Sussex County Council in partnership with East Sussex County Council

Theme:  Beachcombing for Creativity – meeting today’s challenges for early years creativity using found objects 

For:  Artists, early years practitioners, heads of centres, cultural managers, local authority advisors, early years professionals, arts or cultural organisations

Aims:              All along the coast, the beach may be more accessible than a forest, so how can we adapt the Forest School approach to make the most of our nearest outdoor environment? This Professional Development Day also includes practice shared by a local setting, information about recent projects and important insight into the latest changes in early years education and what impact this has on creativity.

9.30 am           Registration and coffee

10.00am          Earlyarts Welcome to St Leonard’s Children’s Centre – speed networking and Earlyarts Put Yourself on the Map Campaign

10.45am          Tickell Review and Education Act – what will be the effects on creativity? An in-depth review with Carole Somers; Children's Centre Senior Early Years Teacher and Jennette Abel; Teacher leading on 0-2’s provision. An opportunity to discuss the Tickell recommendations and consultation process.

11.45am          Sharing local practice: Visit to St Nick’s Nursery with Kirsty Halvey – Early Years Service Manager for Fellowship of St Nicholas

12.15pm          Earlyarts knowledge session – updates on local and national practice and the national network. Clare Halstead – WSCC Earlyarts Pathfinder Partner

12.45pm          Lunch (please bring your own sandwiches or money for the local shop)

1.15pm            Practical Workshop: Beach School*

The Beach School session will include a choice of practical activities in small groups with practitioners from Hastings & St Leonards Children’s Centres, including the Children's Centre teacher and nursery practitioners from St Nicks Nursery.

3.30pm            Return to St Leonard’s

3.45pm            Sharing Experiences learning journeys/feedback, reflection

4.00pm            End

*Further information on the Practical Workshop: Beach School Workshop activities will include:

  • Rock pooling
  • Fire pit – building fires
  • Building shelters
  • Assessing risk
  • Identifying differences of beach flora and fauna

(some of this will depend on the tide and time).

We will be doing this whatever the weather so please ensure that you come prepared!! Appropriate footwear is a must as Hastings has a stoney beach.
