Museum of Science and Industry - Music and Movement

MOSI_LogoStaff from the Museum of Science and Industry worked with eight children from Poundswick Children’s Centre aged 2½ to 3 years who had previously been identified has having a particular interest in music. The project was delivered through three outreach visits to the centre and two visits to the museum. The first outreach visit was to meet the staff and children involved and to familiarise them with museum themes eg. trains, machines, movement, sounds and to introduce the musical elements of fast, slow, high, low, loud, quiet, rhythm, patterns.

The children then visited Xperitots at MOSI .They loved pressing buttons and anything involving manipulation. Lunch time provided an opportunity for the children to observe the silver balloon interactive. They became absolutely fascinated with the colour and movement of the balloon. This provided the stimulus for some exciting creative movement work later in the project working with silver fabric to imitate the movements of the silver balloon. During a second visit, the children visited the Power Hall and were fascinated with the moving machines and very keen to copy any movements and sounds. These ideas were used to create and sing a machine song, explore patterns on drums, and play percussion instruments.

Two follow up outreach sessions followed during which  ideas from previous sessions were developed and reinforced. The last outreach session was a celebration of the children’s achievements and to present them with a visual record of the project in the form of a bound photograph album.
