Manchester Museum - Engaging Parents In their Children’s Learning

Parents and families from Wilbraham Primary School were invited with their children to come on regular visits to The Manchester Museum. The Foundation Stage Co-ordinator facilitated the visits and provided a range of resources for the parents and children to use to support their explorations, such as torches, magnifying glasses, colour paddles.
The groups came on public transport and explored the museum for the first time. They discussed what they saw with their children in their home language and shared previous experiences of the animals and objects. They were given the opportunity to record their thoughts using a camera and clipboard. Some of the parents were encouraged to come by other more confident parents who shared a common bond such as next door neighbours or they shared the same home language.
These parents and families explored the new environment with the support from familiar adults which allowed them to feel safe and secure and become familiar with the Museums.
