ThemeYoung explorers in galleries, museums and libraries

The day will equip participants with innovative ideas for working with art works, objects, books and stories in galleries, museums and libraries -  as well as in schools/settings and at home.

ForEarly years practitioners,  heads of centre, artists,  arts and cultural managers, local authority advisors, early years professionals, early years lecturers and students.

Programme:

10.00    Earlyarts Welcome

10.10    Permission to explore. Galleries, museums and libraries as experiences for young children

10.30   Journey of the imagination.  Freelance gallery educator Laura Davies demonstrates the use of storytelling, imaginative play and large scale image making to explore exhibitions and gallery spaces with young children.  The presentation includes discussion points (and a coffee break!)

12.30    Networking LUNCH (please bring a packed lunch or you can use one of nearby sandwich shops)

1.30     Practical Workshops

Workshop 1    Explorers dig down: working with museum objects. Working in small groups, participants use Bury’s museum collection as a stimulus.  The ideas developed will be adaptable to many other contexts.

Workshop 2    Explorers without limits.  Alison Davies and colleagues from the library service in Bury discuss opening up the boundless world of stories and books to foundation stage children and their families.

3.00     Case Study: How a reception class worked with the exhibitions currently on display.

3.30        Ideas and information exchange, and finish
