Presentation

The ‘Parent’s Arts Award’ ran as a 10 week pilot in two Children’s Centres in Leeds. Eleven parents, all aged 25 and under, attended weekly creative sessions to develop practical skills in visual art, drama/storytelling and music. These sessions happened without the presence of their children – providing the young adults with the opportunity to develop their own creativity and skills which they would then share with their children between sessions. The project enabled the parents to access the local library, the City Art Gallery and attend a free theatre performance as part of the ‘A Night Less Ordinary’ scheme. Parents then delivered their own creative sessions to children in the Centres.

The project structure led to several outcomes for the participants:

  • Enjoyable experiences of different art forms and how they can share this with their children
  • Increased knowledge about free local cultural opportunities and feeling confident enough to access them with their children
  • Arts Award Bronze Level – development of leadership skills and other soft skills helpful in applying for jobs
  • Positive perceptions of the value of arts and cultural experiences in enriching family life

Tessa Irwin is an Extended Services Development Manager
