* Parental Involvement - Alex Sutton-Vane

Alex Sutton-Vane is a visual artist and musician who is working with a nursery school in a socially deprived area, through the Creative Partnerships programme. Part of the remit is to encourage parental involvement. We are inviting some local families to join in with this practical session where Alex will show how to devise simple art projects that engage both parents and children in the nursery setting.

Music and Mark-making - Jo Rickard

Mark making isn't just about pencils or paint on paper. It is a much broader area than this and there are many skills children need to develop in order to make marks confidently. Mark making should be about the enjoyment of 'creating', and music can enhance this process.

We are inviting some local families to join in with this practical session which will cover activities to develop sensory awareness, muscle strength, gross motor skills and fine motor skills. A range of resources including scarves, bubbles, wooden spoons, instruments and drawing tools will be used to give children opportunities to refine their gross motor and fine motor skills through movement and music.

Make The Most Of What You’ve Got! - Richard Bailey

Drawing from a wealth of experience of working with families and children in many areas, Richard Bailey will reveal a whole heap of ideas and activities to encourage creativity in families who have little experience, funds or resources.

Richard is the Nursery Manager at Lancing Children & Family Centre, basing his practice on Reggio Emilia and the development of a process-based, emerging curriculum he will run this session from the Nursery that has been judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.

An international perspective on working with families and communities - Cathy Burckett-St Laurent

In September 2009 Cathy was teaching a class for the University of Cincinnati called Culture and Families in Early Years which included a focus on ways to honour diversity within Early Years classrooms and how to practice anti-bias curriculum that is inclusive of all children. Cathy will share valuable insight from her own experiences of working in an International school with 60 different cultures and facilitate rich discussion on this topic.
