* Practical Workshops:

Workshop 1: Whose Story is it anyway? Karen McDougall

Karen is an Arts Education Consultant who is experienced at working with early years in wide range of learning settings, including museums and galleries.

This workshop will focus on developing appropriate pedagogical skills to use unfamiliar objects to stimulate creative learning with young children.

Karen will use artefacts from a museum collection and work with participants to:

• explore and interpret their historical story

• use techniques that will stimulate the imagination and speaking and listening skills of young children.

• identify what aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum can be addressed through this approach.

Workshop 2: Using artefacts and exhibitions to develop creative themes for learning Julie Wooding

In her role as Access and Learning Manager, Julie Wooding has worked with colleagues to develop Early Years programmes for Tullie House and other museum settings which have focused on using artefacts and exhibitions to develop ‘themes to stimulate learning’.

Julie’s session will start with contextual information about these Early Years programmes and the process that has now been established to develop ‘themes for creative learning’ from artefacts and exhibitions.

The workshop will provide participants with opportunities to experience this process by using artefacts/ pictures from the Tullie House collection to create thematic contexts for:

  • story building
  • story telling
  • other associated interactive learning activities such role play and drama.

The process and themes that are explored will be easily adaptable to other learning contexts.
