Earlyarts Professional Development Day for the Calderdale and Yorkshire area

Theme: Discover the Early Years Using artefacts, songs, rhythm and rhyme from museums and libraries as stimulus for storytelling and imaginative journeys

For: Artists, early years practitioners, heads of centres, cultural managers, local authority advisors, early years professionals, arts or cultural organisations

Aims:

• To explore museum collections and library resources to promote creative learning in the early years

• To develop your toolkit of strategies to build stories and stimulate young children’s imagination and linguistic development by using historical artefacts and images

• To build partnerships between artists, arts, cultural and heritage organisations, early years providers and Local Authority Children’s Services and Cultural Services teams for more integrated delivery

 

10.00 Registration and Refreshments

10.30 Earlyarts Welcome and Introductions - Earlyarts knowledge, key events locally and nationally, review of the latest research and publications introduction to the day.

11.00 Discover learning with Libraries, Museums and Arts – presentation outlining the new Discover in the Early Years Resources & CPD Service in Calderdale: a joint partnership between the Early Years Learning Team and the Discover Resources Service. Lynne Hackett, Education Schools’ & Children’s Services Manager.

11.20 Bankfield Museum trail and store tour – a fascinating journey around the galleries and a glimpse behind the scenes at our museum collections that tell the unique story of Calderdale and it’s people. From the gibbet blade to mummy wrappings you can explore the hidden treasures with Richard MacFarlane, Collections Manager.

12.30 Networking LUNCH (please bring your own sandwiches – there is no café at the museum).

1.30 CPD Workshops –two practical sessions underpinned with latest theory each one hour long, attendees will attend both during the afternoon:

Workshop One - Sharing Songs– music in the early years setting using Kodaly techniques. Run by Sarah Gordon, Early Years Learning Consultant. Sarah Gordon has a degree in Performing Arts, is a trained teacher and works as a Consultant for Calderdale in Early Years. Sarah has been working in collaboration with Yorkshire Youth and Music for 2 years and has had extensive experience in using song, music, rhythm and rhyme to develop language skills, personal social and emotional skills and mathematical skills with small children.

Workshop Two - Sharing Objects – explore how museum handling objects can stimulate our senses, develop speaking and listening skills and create your own miniature museum with Jeffrey Andrews, Education Officer, Discover Learning with Libraries, Museums and Arts.

3.30 Sharing Experiences discussion/feedback

4.00 Dates of next regional PDDs and finish

 

Places are free for Earlyarts Bronze, Silver and Gold Members, or £60 for Earlyarts Free and non members.
