Theme: Exploring Creativity Outdoors
For: Artists, early years practitioners, heads of centres, cultural managers, local authority advisers, early years professionals, arts or cultural organisations.
Aim: To share and explore ideas for using the outdoors as a stimulus for creative learning in the early years.
9.00 Arrival and refreshments
9.30 Earlyarts Welcome introduction to the day and Sutton’s role as an Earlyarts Pathfinder
9:45 Practical Workshop 1 Exploring the Ecology Centre* - practical workshop with Mary Buckton. Mary shares her extensive knowledge and experience of working at the ecology centre and how to use the environment to extend children’s creativity through sensory activities. With reference to local good practice and case studies/experiences from local settings.
11:00 Practical Workshop 2 The Name of the Tree* – with Karin Andrews Jashapara.Karin is an experienced storyteller and puppeteer who will lead a hands-on exploration of storytelling.
12:00 Earlyarts Knowledge share and networking. Up to date information on local events and news from Earlyarts.
12:30 Lunch – please bring your own lunch
13:30 Practical Workshop 3 Forest School – with Rebecca Moody. An outdoors workshop where Rebecca will introduce elements of forest school practice and how to extend children’s experiences of the natural world.

Exploring the Ecology Centre
Mary Buckton is a Biodiversity Education Officer and trained teacher (PGCE). She has been teaching environmental education for 8 years, at Sutton Ecology Centre for 4 years.
Content of workshop: Tour of grounds, general overview of how we use it for biodiversity education. Sessions suitable for pre-school and reception children, Fab Five – exploring the Ecology Centre using all your senses: find the lost colours of the rainbow and put it back in the sky; follow the adventures of Sticky the Squirrel, smelly cocktails, secret boxes and eye in the sky! All activities suitable for your school grounds or local park too!
The Name of the Tree
Karin Andrews Jashapara is a freelance puppeteer, storyteller, workshop leader and musician. Between 1998 – 2008 she formed Rhythm Tree Theatre a company specialising in puppetry with live music. Collaborated with musicians Sarha Moore and Will Embliss, with designer Jenny Carey (Croaky Flies Again) and with directors Margaret Sheehy (Scrappetto, Croaky Flies Again) and Zannie Fraser (Blue Like an Apple).
Karin has been actively involved in numerous events in Sutton including ‘model & shadow theatre workshops at the Europa gallery’ & ‘storytelling and CARNIVALISTA music for Hackbridge Community Centre.
Content of workshop: Karin’s workshop will look at ways of telling a story using certain structures and emphasis and will consider ways of learning stories.
