Theme:    Bigger & Brighter: Developing creativity through photography and ‘Big’ art work

For:          Artists, early years practitioners, heads of centres, cultural managers, local authority advisers,  early years professionals, arts or cultural organisations

Aims:       To develop practitioner’s skills and confidence in promoting children’s creativity through the use  of photography and working on large scale 3D models 

9:15am     Arrival & refreshments

9:45am     Earlyarts welcome & introductions    

9:50am     Showcase Presentation – Jo Belloli, Associate Producer/Early Years Programmer, Polka Theatre & Cath Rive, Artist-in-Residence, Eastwood Nursery School and Children’s CentreJo and Cath will showcase a project that took place last year which involved the children from  Eastwood Nursery School using the Polka Theatre’s garden as a location for taking  photographs.

10:20am    Practical Workshop 1*  Image,Object & Environment: Photography as a Starting Point for Learning with James Aldridge  

In this session you will explore the role of photography for children in documenting and reflecting on their experience of their local environment. James will share examples from past creative learning projects with younger children, and you will have chance to explore and document your own local environment through photography and making.

1:30pm      Earlyarts update and speed networking

1:45pm      Practical Workshop 2 * Big Art with Simon Honey

Simon will lead a workshop that will give you the confidence to think Big with the art you help children make. The workshop includes examples of Big art works created by young children and a hands on making session. You will work as a team to create a big artwork that children can help make and then play in.  

3:50pm      Reflections on the day

For the workshops participants will need to bring the following items:

  • Digital camera and USB lead
  • A colourful plastic container that fruit, vegetables or mushrooms came in, a well washed fruit juice container, it can be cut opened and flattened.

Please wear appropriate clothing for working outdoors.

 James Aldridge

James Aldridge is a visual artist and consultant, and director of Creative Ecology (www.creative-ecology.co.uk). James works with schools, pre-schools, arts/heritage and environmental organisations to research the value of creative approaches to learning, and to develop and implement new programmes of work. James has also worked as an artist and mentor with 5x5x5=creativity since 2004.

Simon Honey

London Borough of Sutton based, Simon Honey MABA (hons) is an award winning eco-artist who has 21 years professional experience of creating art in a community setting.  Freelance he has initiated hundreds of successful community artworks involving thousands of people with over 190 community groups and organisations to date. He specialises in natural materials recycled and natural materials. Big Art commissions include gardens, carved and handmade chairs, sculpture, willow domes, videos, digital photography/images, mosaic and murals.  See www.eco-arts.co.uk  for more details.
