I think we were able to put ourselves in the child’s place, and I think that’s the best way to learn. It’s a nice feeling of a group working together, all very concerned about the same issues in early years education – Michelle Sorensen, Play to Learn PDD, 24th June 2011, Norwich

I’m hoping we can bring some of that magic forward when we do storytelling in our setting – Natasha, Exploring Creativity Outdoors PDD, 28th June 2011, Sutton

The storytelling exercises; it was good to see the oral tradition as a tool is still alive and working – Janna Feldman, Exploring Creativity Outdoors PDD, 28th June 2011, Sutton

I really enjoyed the storytelling, being able to use your voice and your actions to tell a story and make it more interesting. Going into the outdoors, not all children in cities get to go outdoors much, it’s a really valuable thing for them to be able to explore outdoors and nature – Jana Torker, Exploring Creativity Outdoors PDD, 28th June 2011, Sutton

It has given me ideas about how we could use different settings to spark off stories from children rather than bring a ready-made story to them, to use simple objects you might find, to use as a question, a starting point, a bit like the spark that starts the fire; how we can ignite that whole series of different storiesJon Lloyd, Exploring Creativity Outdoors PDD, 28th June 2011, Sutton

Doing more outdoors, getting ideas, and I really liked the storytelling, I thought that was really interesting – Alice Ford, Exploring Creativity Outdoors PDD, 28th June 2011, Sutton

The Earlyarts network is a vital organ to keep the heart of creativity beating on the agenda of policy makers and local authorities. Jane Sedgewick, West Sussex County Council

It was great to connect with others working in this field who had so much expertise and knowledge to share. The willingness of everyone there to do this was inspiring. The day was very helpful in giving me an overview of some of the things going on in early years work and the opportunity to play with other professionals was enormous fun. Participant, Play to Learn, PDD, June 2011

The two workshops complemented each other very well and were both very relevant to my work as an early years music practitioner. They were both lots of fun too! Participant, Play to Learn, PDD, June 2011

A brilliant show and great workshop with loads of ideas. Participant, Drama Theatre and Creative Learning in Early Years, PDD, April 2011

I came along expecting a course where I would sit writing notes all day. I happily realised it was my type of course when the first activity was making a sculpture out of the contents of my handbag! The course leaders all had very interesting ideas which appealed immediately but the most exciting aspect for me is how the information we were given has fired up my imagination weeks after the course to develop new activities to do with carers and children. Participant, Engaging our Families, PDD, April 2011

I was able to go to a setting the next day and make a circle of light with the children outside which they loved doing. Also the staff really enjoyed this. We also stayed outside for snack time which the children loved. Participant, Adventuring in the Outdoors, PDD, March 2011

I felt that it was an enriching and genuinely creative day. I made connections with other professionals, and felt supported, nurtured and empowered to work creatively with children and families. Participant, Reflective Journals, PDD, February 2011

This was a really inspiring day.  The music and song brought the gallery to life and I’m now determined to do the same in my own museum. Participant, Puppetry and Music, PDD, January 2011

I have attended many Professional Development Days now and each time I come away inspired. I always learn something new and can always take something back to share with colleagues. These days provide lots of learning and are lots of fun! Participant, Once Upon a Time... PDD, December 2010

Meeting new people, sharing ideas and learning new ways is fundamental in my very individual learning journey. Participant, Working with Children and Families PDD, November 2010

In my opinion a successful experience should leave you wanting more.... The Earlyarts Unconference certainly left me with that feeling!!  I could have watched Tell Tale Hearts all day, especially with the group of ‘real’ children ... their honest, innocent reactions and the performers' spellbinding ability to grab and hold our attention was incredibly powerful! I could have easily chosen four or five workshops to attend and/or equally spent the majority of the day looking at stalls and talking to the vast array of knowledgeable people there! It was truly moving and inspiring to be part of such a gathering which incorporated an enormous array of creative people, whatever their experience or motivation for being there.  Claire Butters, Children's Centre Teacher, Earlyarts International UnConference, November 2010

We have got to make a stand for our children’s education and creative opportunities in this country. Our politicians do not get it nor will they! Education and creativity are part of the same thing, always have been and always will be. The most successful people in our country are the best creative thinkers. Come on everybody make the links!  Stop ripping creativity out of education! It doesn’t want to leave nor will it! Stop fighting it, accept it and move on! Sarah Gordon, Early Years Learning Consultant, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

For inspiration, for connection of leading minds, for practical suggestions and 'worldly' access to practise - I would recommend this event strongly.  Peter Ellis, Founder - Cosy Foundation, Earlyarts International UnConference

I really enjoyed the whole day and there are many aspects from both the discussions and practical events that I can use within my own practice. It is always good to be able to share ideas with like minded people and realise that others see the value that children gain from having practitioners that encourage their creative ideas. Often people see the arts as a subject area and that you are either good or bad at it, there is nothing inbetween. I don’t see it like this and don’t want the children I am working with to have this narrow view. I want them to use their eyes, express their feelings and demonstrate through their actions that being creative can be a part of every aspect of their lives. This message I felt was expressed at the UnConference. Annette Lorryman, Teacher and Student Mentor, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

Thought-provoking, challenging, fantastic.  The day has left me with lots to reflect on, question and digest.  Earlyarts International UnConference Delegate November 2010

During the fantastic performance by Tell Tale Hearts, to hear the ‘oohs’ and laughs out loud from the young children watching brought the whole thing to life and reinforced the reason why we are all so passionate about working in early arts, the spontaneity of the children was priceless!  Debbie Goldsmith, Learning Curator, Tate Liverpool, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

A playful, inspiring day which clarified ideas and renewed my passion for creative work with the early years. Kathryn Holt, Freelance Storyteller, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

You feel as though you are not alone and there's a lot of passion.  So your passion and everyone else's equals big passion.  Plus the creativity that comes from the adults for children should be applauded too. Earlyarts International UnConference Delegate November 2010

Through dimming lights, lighting candles, burning incense and hearing music we were transported to a calm oasis inspired, beautiful, serene. Manasamitra transformed a space into a journey of India. Cate Madden, Music Advisor, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

Good opportunity to find out about the diversity of provision for early years. Great to enter into serious dialogue about an area that is too often considered too juvenile for meaningful discussion. Excellent opportunity to meet people in interesting and related fields. Also good that this is happening in the North and accessible by public transport. Hannah MacKay, Cultural Ambassadors Co-ordinator, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

The performance from Tell Tale Hearts had me transfixed, it was such a simple idea but had the wonderful children totally engaged from the outset. Jackie Rhodes, Rotherham, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

I was inspired by the innovative approach to early years education from the international key note speakers. I hope to bring these new approaches to my own work. Heather Brown, Freelance Forest School Leader, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

The amount of experience and wealth of knowledge and creativity that is available is amazing. It is vitally important in these particularly tough times we do not lose sight of this and the impact this has on children’s development. Being able to share good practice is vital and this has been a rewarding experience. Michelle Dennet, Forest School Teacher, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

Well organised, diverse and inspiring. Thanks for including me in the programme, it’s been a real buzz! Annie Berrington, Outdoor Practitioner, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

I was really pleased to hear of the international resource bank now up on the Earlyarts website. This was my first ‘UnConference’ and was really impressed by its fluidity and, of course, technology. The mix of stands and workshop choices made for a learning experience that was really tailored to my current work streams. Carly Frey, Youth Music, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

I was moved by the immersive, experiential learning from the Max Workshop – lots of impact for managing behaviours and SEAL programmes. Earlyarts International UnConference Delegate November 2010

I loved the idea of having parents in the classrooms with the children. This will enable parents to gain knowledge around play and maybe into further education. I know it is very difficult to follow Tom Hobson’s work in England due to a lot of various health and safety reasons. He is promoting early learning as well as educating the parents. I am really thrilled by his work.Earlyarts International UnConference Delegate November 2010

For a freelance early years arts practitioner it is great to spend time with like minded colleagues, to validate and share experiences – the good and the bad. Thea Jacob, Freelance Early Years Arts Practitioner, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

We all know working with children needs to be holistic and in my head I knew the same was true with parents, but today I feel I have gained a real vision of how to move forward strategically to achieve this. Jacki Bracewell, Deputy Head Teacher, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

I thoroughly enjoyed the day, it was truly inspirational. Helen Russell, Mercury Arts, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

I just want to congratulate you on a marvellous event and thank you very much for inviting me to attend . I had a great time and met lots of old friends thanks again. Barbara O'Meara, Cork College, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

The programme was brilliantly balanced and interactive and we enjoyed meeting some old friends and new contacts. Nathan Archer, Earlyarts Chair, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

A hugely stimulating day in rather ‘depressing’ times and yes the whole event helped to put our funding problems in perspective.  Where there is will and such a collection of voices…there will always be a way … we just have to be more inventive and resilient too! Natasha Holmes, Tell Tale Hearts, Earlyarts International UnConference November 2010

Thanks for a truly brilliant event yesterday – hope you were all very happy with it! Earlyarts International UnConference Delegate, November 2010

Being inside a lycra pod invited an experience of transportation.  I felt like I’d moved into the woodlands and become part of the earth.  A moving creature of the underworld. Participant, Inside Outside: how outdoor spaces can lead to creative experiences PDD, October 2010

The creative movement was not my first choice however a colleague returned from her session overflowing with enthusiasm so I swapped and am so pleased I did. The ideas were so simple to take back to school and use immediately! We were able to cascade them to the rest of the staff enthusiastically and enable them to develop them for KS1. Participant, Inside Outside: how outdoor spaces can lead to creative experiences PDD, October 2010

I loved the whole experience of being outdoors in the natural environment and learning age old skills and crafts with a view to passing these on to future generations. I had a huge emotional response to this experience which I was not expecting. I learnt that there are skills that we CAN teach our young children safely and that we CAN improve their learning experiences using the outdoor environment to enhance both practical and creative skills. It was a 'CAN DO ' experience. Participant, Let's Get Creative in the Outdoors PDD, September 2010

Attending Earlyarts Professional Development Days is always an inspiring and thought provoking experience. Participant, Engaging Parents PDD, July 2010

The practical workshop was fun and gave me lots of ideas for the future. Participant, Early Years Music PDD, July 2010

I was very impressed by the enthusiasm that each activity leader displayed and their obvious commitment to present ideas that will inspire young children to use their minds creatively and imaginatively. This is not restricted to the visual arts but also incorporates the use of dance, movement and music. The activities we tried will also help to boost children’s confidence and promote the idea that it is the participating that is important not the end result – this is essential for young children. Participant, Engaging Parents PDD, July 2010

This day really helped me to get inside the head of a child aged 2-5 years, and experience what they might when visiting a gallery or museum. Zoe Fagg, FYT Co-ordinator, July 2010

The Development Day at The Rep (3rd July) was exciting and inspiring. I came away with lots of practical ideas and inspirations. I met interesting and interested professionals and felt a great sense of encouragement to keep developing projects and reflecting and researching...Carol Graham,  Story Space, July 2010

Earlyarts Professional Development Days always make me feel part of something bigger. Hearing such passionate, energetic practitioners really does make you think anything is possible. I spent the whole journey home thinking ‘what if’ and ‘why not?’. The other thing that always strikes me about Earlyarts events is how incredibly warm and lovely everyone is – days like this make me feel very lucky to be working with the early years. Becky Prestwich – Young People’s Projects Officer, the Royal Exchange Theatre, July 2010

A brilliant day with some excellent ideas. I felt inspired to try something new with my nursery class. I have been lucky enough to continue working in the community garden and share what we did with other members of staff and more importantly with our children. They love the spider`s web which was created amongst the trees. Angela Dixon, Nursery Teacher, Appletree Children's Centre, June 2010

Earlyarts has kept me informed, and put me in touch nationally and internationally, with some of the most developmental practice in terms of creative approaches for young children. It’s very inspiring. Penny Hay, Director of Research at 5x5x5=creativity and Senior Lecturer in Arts Education at Bath Spa University

We came as a group of four, a creative collaborator and three practitioners, and it was really great to be there as a team hearing the same messages, allowing us time to reflect on the things we experienced and how they related to our setting. The team went back to the centre fizzing with ideas of how to further develop our practice. Lianna Green, Children's Centre Teacher, Manchester

The Earlyarts Professional Development Day was very inspiring - almost too much for the brain on one day! But I think it is indicative of just how many innovative initiatives are now happening in early years and the challenge is to join it up as far as possible and make it count, which is what Earlyarts is able to do. We're looking forward to being on this journey with Earlyarts. Elaine Bates, Early Years Co-ordinator, The Manchester Museum

Loved the theory and experiential learning - going to find out more on the 5x5x5=creativity project. Earlyarts Member at the NW PDD on 8th July 2009

I always come away from the Earlyarts Professional Development Days very fired up. The last one found me walking home to the bus through the centre of Manchester with ideas for plays about the body - including big legs in stripey socks - and large plastic beach balls - and all manner of other things...........

And it's very exciting.

So - Earlyarts - what does it have to offer? For a freelancer like me, it is great meeting like minded people, getting energised about creativity, playing, having the chance to try out new ideas in a safe environment, and for once to not have to take the lead! There is a clear agenda which keeps us up to speed with the latest developments and initiatives, and then we do active workshops and share ideas. When you are busy, it is great that these days come along when you can start to digest some of yours and others learning.
Jenny Harris - Freelance Drama Practitioner

We have been meaning to write to say thanks for the Earlyarts Professional Development Day! It was very enjoyable to get an opportunity to participate in an Earlyarts Forum, and meet with other practitioners. It inspired us both to think of a new project, and within a short time, one had cropped up. Nursery Rhymes through stories, songs and puppets at a setting in Wombwell. It is an ideal new space to work in, the idea builds on a previous project where the school felt Nursery Rhymes are all but dead and were looking for a way of bringing their meanings back to life again. Many thanks again for all the ideas and connections. Mary and Ken Walker, Pandora's Daughter, Storytelling, Puppetry and the Arts with Young Children

Just wanted to let you know what a fantastic day we have had today! It has been really thought provoking with excellent contributors. The two who deserve special mention are John Rainer whose presentation was very informative without being too technical (which is necessary for me!) and Jo Albin-Clark from Edge Hill. She was exceptional in her skills as a facilitator in the morning and very interesting in her workshop in the afternoon. Thank you so much for organising all this. Kathy Brodie, Early Years Practitioner

Awakening the imagination is the most wonderful thing an artist or educator can do, and you certainly did that with us!  Anne Jones, Leasowe Nursery and Adult Learning Centre

Your conference was a truly inspiring day from beginning to end - sharing good practice is a powerful tool and I intend to use some of the ideas from today's conference with our practitioners. The conference will live on and continue to influence and enhance people's thinking and develop their practice. Thank you for the affirmation and for the food for the soul which today provided. Marian Fraser, Lead Early Years Pedagogue, Cheshire County Council

Well done for such a fantastic, professionally run, and well thought through piece of work. We were challenged, excited and thoughtful from start to finish. And we had a lot of fun! Joanne Albin-Clark, Early Years Lecturer, Edge Hill University

Thank you for the reminder that music is central to human communication; children deserve to be enveloped in its magic. Julie Callaghan,Foundation Stage Advisory Teacher, Cumbria Sure Start

Ruth Churchill's direction of this training event was very interesting throughout, and covered a wide range of aspects of creative arts. I found the whole day inspiring, and I went away with lots of ideas of how I can move things forward in my area. Thank you for a really worthwhile day. Kate Barker, Early Years Advisory Teacher, Blackpool Council

Your session ‘Creative Journeys Through Experiential Learning' was very helpful. It provided useful information on current thinking about the ways in which young children can be creatively engaged and assessed which is easily transferable to other age groups and learning contexts. I always find your work inspiring.  Margaret Riches, Director, Cumbria Arts in Education

I would just like to thank you for a spectacular session on Friday. I had a very good time, have lots of new ideas, understand how well grounded they are in the relevant theories, and can now connect with many more people than before. Well done on a great achievement! Helen Swainston, Westerton Primary School, Wakefield

Thank you so much, I believe that this was one of the most inspiring and timely pieces of professional development I have ever experienced. This training proved that everyone's personal contributions, no matter how isolated they seem, are valued and vital to achieving our aims and realising the child-considerate principles that make ours such a meaningful community; one that I am privileged to be a part of. I would be honoured to work with you in the future.  John Byrne, Manchester University

The den making work was truly inspiring. All the case studies of your international early years work showed how much learning can be fun and how important it is to give the youngest children a good start in their lives. Danny Lane, Music and the Deaf

Wonderful networking opportunity for sharing and cross-fertilisation of ideas and creativity. Great potential to influence development of early years service delivery to delight and inspire our children. Proud and grateful to have been a participant. Thank you for the opportunity.Barbara Nicholls, Development Manager, National Childminding Association

We are now working with a high profile gallery on a programme of training for next year, and it's all thanks to the professional development meeting you organised there a few months ago! I met our last two clients through your networking sessions and I really can't thank you enough! Thank you again. Rachel Riggs, Director, DNA Theatre Company
